First half surge nets Pipers win over Gusties

A 15-0 run just inside the 10-minute mark of the first half ended with a trio of three-pointers from Tyler Panell (Fy., Portland, Ore.), giving the Pipers a significant lead they would never relinquish.

Down by one, 22-21, with 9:42 remaining in the opening half, Mike Campbell (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) started the run with a pair of jumpers that sandwiched a Carl Hipp (Sr., Little Canada, Minn.) layup.

Pannell's nine points over the next three possessions put Hamline up by 14, 36-22, with 6:32 to play before the intermission. The Pipers led by 10 at the half, 45-35.

Gustavus cut their deficit to five, 54-49, at 12:36, but Noah Aguirre (So., Fillmore, Minn.) responded for the Pipers with a trio of jumpers that helped the lead grow back to nine, 60-51, with 10:15 on the clock.

After that, it was all about the Pipers, as they went on to win by 12, 86-74.

Hipp led the Pipers with 23 points and 15 rebounds while Aguirre added 13 points and three steals. Pannell tallied 12 points and Brandon Rieg (Jr., Riverside, Calif.) added 10. Levi Wenrich (Jr., Newhall, Calif.) helped out the Piper offense by dishing out seven assists. Campbell and Aguirre added four assists apiece.

Gustavus was led by 20 points from Dan Schmidtknecht (Sr., La Crosse, Wis.).

The Pipers are now 11-8, 9-5 MIAC while the Gusties are 12-8, 10-5 MIAC. Hamline will travel to Saint Mary's on Saturday, February 5, for a 3:00 p.m. game at Saint Mary's. It's the second game in a women's-men's double-header.
