After Fritz Waldvogel (Jr., Mendota Heights, Minn.) provided the only
scoring of the opening 15 minutes on a 4-yard touchdown reception from
Dakota Tracy (Jr., Geneva, Minn.), Tommies put 35 points on the board in
the second quarter.
Colin Tobin (Jr., Itasca, Ill.) opened the quarter with a one-yard
run for a TD at 11:14. Five minutes later, Waldvogel caught his second
touchdown pass from Tracy, this time a 41-yard toss.
Brady Ervin (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) pulled down an interception
and returned the pick 2 yards for a Tommie touchdown with just over four
and a half minutes left in the half.
The Tommies then turned to some trickery on the field as Tracy found
himself on the receiving end of a touchdown pass with just over two
minutes to play in the half. He pitched the ball out to Nick Gleisner
(Jr., Bloomington, Minn.) and headed to the end zone, where Gleisner
found him for the 22-yard TD pass.
Connor Sathre (Jr., Maple Grove, Minn.) broke up the St. Thomas
scoring with a 12-yard rushing touchdown with 48 seconds on the clock.
The Tommies ended the half with a 32-yard pass from Tracy to Logan
Marks (So., Mendota Heights, Minn.) with four seconds remaining before
the break.
Marks put his second touchdown of the day on the board to start the
second half, pulling in a 30-yard pass from Tracy at 11:3 in the third
quarter.
Tracy ultimately threw for 221 yards on 10-for-14 passing, with 177 of those passing yards coming from those four TD tosses.
Ben Wartman (Sr., Prior Lake, Minn.) added a five-yard TD run at 4:19 for the Tommies.
Zach Cornish (Fy., Barstow, Calif.) then provided the highlight of
the day for the Piper offense, breaking free on a 60-yard touchdown run
late in the third quarter, scoring with two and a half minutes on the
clock.
Tobin had the final St. Thomas touchdown at 14:13 in the third
quarter, pulling in a 13-yard pass from Greg Morse (Jr., Saint Paul,
Minn.).
John Broback (So., Apple Valley, Minn.) hit a 28-yard field goal to
end the scoring in the game at 8:26. He also made both kicks on the
earlier touchdowns and is now 21-for-21 in PATs.
Sathre led the Piper quarterbacks with 82 yards on 8-for-16 passing and had the 12-yard rushing TD.
Defensively, St. Thomas’ tackles were split up amongst a host of
Tommies. Cory Olsen (Jr., Elk River, Minn.) had 11 and Brady Lorenzen
(Sr., Grand Meadow, Minn.) had 10 to lead the Pipers.
The Tommies remain undefeated at 7-0 overall, 5-0 in MIAC play.
Hamline falls to 1-5 overall and 0-4 in conference play. The Pipers will
next travel to Concordia on Saturday, October 23, for a 1:00 p.m. game.
