The Gusties scored a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter to take a
14-0 lead, as Logan Becker connected with Muresuk Mena on a 17-yard
pass at 11:42 and then with Cody Sukalski on a 28-yard throw at 3:17.
As the second quarter began, the Gusties held possession of the ball.
The Piper defense kept them out of the end zone and Hamline took over
on downs at their own three-yard line.
At third and nine on the Piper four-yard line, Adam Meyer (Jr., Cold
Spring, Minn.) hit Tim Queck (Jr., Annandale, Minn.) on a 49-yard pass
that got the Pipers to the Gustie 47.
Zach Cornish (Fy., Barstow, Calif.) and Connor Sathre (Jr., Maple
Grove, Minn.) shared rushing duties and Alex House (Sr., Champlin,
Minn.) had a 10-yard reception to help drive the Pipers down the field.
Cornish then carried the ball the final two yards for the touchdown at 5:51 in the second quarter.
Gustavus would have one more score before the end of the half, as
Sukalski had a three-yard TD reception from Becker with 12 seconds
remaining.
The Gusties opened the second half with the ball, and after managing a
pair of first downs, Marc McDonald (So., Portland, Ore.) intercepted
Becker at the Piper 42-yard line. He returned it nine yards to Gustie
territory.
Meyer capitalized on the turnover, hitting each of his three main
wide receivers on the ensuing scoring drive. Queck pulled in a 12-yard
catch, House a 10-yard reception, and Anthony Iten (Sr., Fridley, Minn.)
had catches of 6- and 23-yards.
The 23-yard reception scored Hamline's second touchdown of the game
at 10:20 in the third quarter. John Broback's (So., Apple Valley, Minn.)
kick was good for the second time in the game.
The Gusties then went on to pull away from the game with a trio of
big scoring plays, starting with an 85-yard rushing touchdown by Jeffrey
Dubose at 1:32 in the third quarter.
Jason Cook then blocked Broback's punt on the next Piper possession
and Greg Lane picked it up and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown.
Gustavus' final touchdown came at the start of the fourth quarter
when Brad Kruckeberg intercepted Meyer on the Gustie 30-yard line and
returned it 70 yards for a touchdown.
