In the opener, the Pipers jumped on the Gustie pitching early,
putting two runs on the board in the first inning on a 2-RBI double from
J.D. Modrynski (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.).
The double drove in Tony Rogers (Jr., St. Michael, Minn.), who had
singled to get on base, and Alex Buresh (Sr., Vadnais Heights, Minn.),
who reached on an error.
The Gusties scored their lone run of the opener in the bottom of the
second on a sacrifice fly, although they did put together eight hits in
Hamline scored three more runs in the fifth as Andy Powell (Jr.,
Minneapolis, Minn.) hit a one-out double to start the charge. Cory
Miller (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.) then reach on a catcher's interference.
That set up a three-run play on Rogers' at-bat. He doubled to drive in
Powell and Miller, then advanced to third on the throw. The throw was
bobbled by the catcher, and the error allowed Rogers to finish the trip
around the bases and score.
Rogers was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored while Modrynski was 1-for-3 with the two RBI.
Matt Eickman (Fy., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) threw a complete game to pick up the win and move to 3-1 on the year.

The Pipers opened game two much the same as they did the opener,
scoring to start the game. Powell led off with a single and Miller
followed suit. Powell advanced to third on a fielder's choice that
capture Miller at second, and then scored on a passed ball for the 1-0
Gustavus then put runs on the board in their next three at-bats to
take a commanding lead. They scored two in the first on two hits and a
Piper error, added one more run in the second on a single hit, and then
three in the third on four hits.
The Pipers put one more run on the board in the fourth as Buresh led
off with a singled and was brought home by a Dan Ellefson (Fy.,
Burnsville, Minn.) single.
Gustavus scored their final two runs in the sixth innings on three hits.
Powell was 2-for-3 with a run scored in the second game, finished the
day by going 4-for-7 at the plate. Brett Bugielski (So., River Falls,
Wis.) took the loss on the mound, throwing two and one-thirds innings.
Hamline is now 11-17, 4-4 MIAC after the conference split while
Gustavus is 9-11, 2-4 MIAC. The Pipers return home to Midway Stadium to
host St. Olaf on Saturday, April 17, at 1:00 p.m.
