In both games of the double-header, the Saints put a trio of runs on
the board in the first inning. They went on to win the opening game by a
score of 6-2 and the second game, which began right at midnight, 10-2.
The opening game of the double-header saw the Saint score three runs
in each of the first two innings to take a 6-0 lead. The Saints, filling
the role of the home team on the scoreboard in game one, knocked in
their first three runs on four hits. In the second inning, they tallied
their runs on a hit, a walk, and two errors.
After that, the Piper pitching staff went on to hold the St.
Scholastica hitting to just one harmless hit in the sixth through the
rest of the game.
Hamline’s pair of runs came in the top of the sixth. Alex Buresh
(Sr., Vadnais Heights, Minn.) hit a lead-off single, Tres Humerickhouse
(Jr., Farmington, Minn.) drew a walk, and J.D. Modrynski (Jr.,
Lakeville, Minn.) added the second single of the inning to load the
bases.
First-year Dan Ellefson (Burnsville, Minn.) then drew the second walk
of the inning to earn the RBI on Buresh’s run. His classmate Jacob Dahl
(Burnsville, Minn.) was hit by a pitch and received credit for the RBI
as Humerickhouse crossed the plate for the second Piper run.
In game two, the Saints put three runs on the board in the first
inning a pair of hits, a walk, and a wild pitch. They added four more in
the third inning on seven hits, all singles.
Hamline’s pair of runs came in the fourth, leading off in the same
fashion as they did in game one - Buresh singled to lead off and
Humerickhouse drew a walk. This time Modrynski’s singled through the
right side, driving in Buresh. Ellefson then singled up the middle to
bring in Humerickhouse.
Modrynski went 3-for-5 at the plate, including going 2-for-2 in the
second game, while Buresh went 3-for-6 in the two games to lead the
Pipers at the plate. St. Scholastica was led by Tom Juberian (So., Park
Rapids, Minn.), who went 5-for-7 at the plate and scored three runs in
the second game. Sean Claugherty (Sr., Oakdale, Minn.) had four RBI in
the two games, including three in game two as he went 3-for-4 at the
plate in that contest.
The Pipers open the season at 0-2 overall with the non-conference
losses. St. Scholastica starts out at 2-0. Hamline will continue
non-conference play at the Metrodome on Sunday, March 7, with a 10:45
