Crown tallied a run in the top of the second as Nicholas Garrard
(Jr., Helena, Mont.) hit a lead-off single up the middle and ultimately
scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Knox (Fy., White Fish, Mont.).
The Pipers evened the score in the bottom of the third. Cody Kielsa
(Fy., Buffalo, Minn.) bunted to lead off and then stole second. He
advanced to third on a ground-out and scored as J.D. Modrynski (Jr.,
Lakeville, Minn.) dropped a single into shallow center field.
Hamline took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth as Tony Rogers
walked, stole second, and scored on an RBI ground-out to first base by
Alex Buresh (Sr., Vadnais Heights, Minn.). The duo then teamed up in the
eighth to put Hamline up 3-1. Rogers hit a lead-off triple to the wall
in right-center and scored on a sacrifice fly from Buresh.
Benford threw three strikeouts and gave up five hits en route to the
win. Rogers was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored while Buresh
had two RBI.
Hamline’s record is now 14-18, 7-5 MIAC record with the
non-conference win. The Storm’s record is 3-20, 1-14 UMAC. The Pipers
will return to conference play against Bethel tomorrow, Tuesday, April
27, at 2:30 p.m.
