Description:
Brothers and Keepers: A Memoir by John Wideman gives us insights into the personal
aspects of the relationship between brothers one of whom is incarcerated and the other is
socially “successful”. Michelle Alexander’s book The New Jim Crow and her Commitment to
Community talk in Fall 2012 helped us see the larger social, legal, and systemic dimensions
of the gradual escalation of incarceration of African American men in the US since the
sixties. Wideman takes us into the personal dimensions of what happens to families and
their relationships.
