Stephanie Zimmerman ’10, an English and business administration major, came to Hamline convinced of one thing. “I wanted to be an English major,” she says. It was through Hamline’s Bridges Scholars program, an undergraduate class for career and vocational planning, that Zimmerman realized she also had a talent for business. The two majors meshed brilliantly. “Both involve learning how to communicate, gaining different perspectives, and problem solving,” she says. “I do a lot of theoretical work in my English classes and get the practical application through the business major.”Practical application is built directly into the business curriculum. All students are required to conduct informational interviews with professionals in the field and to participate in an internship or volunteering. Zimmerman works as a development intern with Graywolf Press, a nonprofit literary publisher in Minneapolis -- the perfect fit for her combined major.“I made that connection through Hamline,” she says. “The School of Business continually offers networking opportunities with professionals. I can’t go a week without an email alerting me to a professional seminar or a workshop or a speaker coming to campus.”Zimmerman also serves as the current president of the Hamline Student Business Group (HSBG), a student organization that creates a discussion space for students interested in business and economics, organizes speakers and networking events, and forms a bridge between School of Business staff and faculty members and students. “We provide professional development opportunities for students, and help support the School of Business community,” says Zimmerman, a community she finds united through close connections and professional focus.“I love the personal attention I get through the School of Business. The professors all know me by name and are interested in what students are doing,” she says. “There’s a sense of shared passion here -- everyone working together toward a similar goal.”
