Whereas, Hamline University was built at its present site on Snelling Avenue in 1880, and Hancock Elementary School was built almost directly across the street in 1887; and for more than 100 years students and faculty from both schools have crossed Snelling Avenue to work with each other; and

Whereas, in 1991, the relationship between the schools was formalized when the Federal Government approved magnet school status for Hancock by virtue of its collaboration with Hamline University; and in 1996, the elementary school was renamed Hancock/Hamline University Collaborative Magnet School, and

Whereas, the relationship has served past and current generations and will continue to serve future generations, improving academic, social, and cultural opportunities for all; and

Whereas, we recognize the dedication of hundreds of faculty and staff and thousands of students to the principles of this collaboration: meaningful relationships, shared learning, and cultural diversity; and

Whereas, on the occasion of Hamline University's 150th and Hancock's 117th anniversaries, it is appropriate to rededicate and recommit ourselves to the long-standing partnership between Hamline University and Hancock/Hamline University Collaborative Magnet School;

Now, Therefore, I , Randy Kelly, Mayor of the City of Saint Paul, do hereby proclaim Friday, May 7, 2004 to be Hancock/ Hamline Collaboration Day in the City of Saint Paul in appreciation for their countless collaborative achievements in improving the educational opportunities for St. Paul's elementary and university students.
