Festival
and Exhibition Now Closed
A variety of related events and programs took
place during the two-month festival and a wide range of special educational
programs and opportunities for experiential learning were offered
for K-12 groups. The selected activities represented Africa’s
profound, rich, and varied artistic and cultural heritage and highlighted
the great
contributions of the continent of Africa in the humanities and the
arts. Please visit Events
above for more information.
The festival centerpiece,
the Material Differences exhibition, appealed
to viewers
of all ages
and levels of knowledge and its installation at
Hamline was designed to be accessible to elementary students. For
example, several objects in the exhibition were displayed at children’s
eye-level. Docent-led tours developed for children and hands-on educational
programs helped students to make connections between the materials
themselves and the objects in the exhibition, engaging students and enabling
them to better relate to and understand African art, music, and culture.
