Anthropology 3980: 150th Anniversary ExcavationFall 2004 Brian Hoffman Anthropology 3980, the "150th Anniversary Excavation", is a special course being offered as part of Hamline University's Sesquicentennial celebration. Student's attending this course will participate in an "archaeological field school" excavating Hamline's original "Hall of Science". This three story, red brick building was Hamline's third structure built on the Saint Paul campus. Dedicated in 1888, this building served Hamline University for over 80 years housing everything from a natural history museum to a World War I military barracks before being demolished in 1971. The Hall of Science site is now an open space between Bush Library, the School of Law, and Old Main. We will excavate a portion of this site during the Fall 2004 semester.
Students participating in ANTH 3980 will learn basic archaeological
field and laboratory methods. They will also be required to contribute
as part of an interdisciplinary and collaborative team. Archaeology
is a holistic discipline linking the humanities, social sciences, and
natural sciences. The "150th Anniversary Excavation" will
involve students from all disciplines across campus. Students will be
asked to contribute to the project based on their particular interests,
skills, and/or major studies. There are no pre-requisites for this course,
but instructor's permission is required. All interested students should
contact Professor Brian Hoffman (bhoffman@gw.hamline.edu).
This course will meet the N and S requirements of the Hamline Plan.
